Black Rosecomb Bantams

This was the first variety of Rosecombs I started with. Rosecombs must be bred with lots of specific things to look for. They have to have large round white lobes, a short back, a large tail, etc. A perfect bird has all these things in balance. This is the easiest color to breed for out of all the colors I have, but they also face some really tough competition!

Reserve RCCL, Humboldt Poultry Fanciers Winter Show, February 11, 2006

A particularly nice Black pullet from 2002, who I never was able to show, due to that nasty END quarantine stuff...

This is Ski. Well no, this is a photo of Ski (pronounced like the sport, I was watching Olympics when I named her). Ski had a "life that most chickens only dream of."

:-)

Her first show was the Gold Coast Poultry Fanciers in early January. She took Best RCCL. Two weeks later she won the same thing at the Pacific Poultry Breeders Association show.

Two weeks later her big sis Lina beat her, but two weeks after that she won Reserve Bantam at the Greater CA show in Fresno.

Her little heart must have been set on bigger and better things. On March 10, 2002, Ski won Best in Show at the Monterey Bay Bantam Club. That was the first time I've ever won Best in Show at an open show. It was a real honor, and I'm proud of my little Ski.

But as they say, the good die young, and Ski was no exception. I am grateful she lived the life she did, and owning such a sweet little champion was a real gift.
